PROGNOSIS OF PARVOVIRUS B19 INFECTION

• Approximately 50% of pregnant women are immune to parvovirus B19 and are not at risk.
• Fetal death following maternal infection is approximately 1-9% (4,32,42,50
• The rate of maternal infection has been shown to depend on the type of exposure.
• For household contacts of patients with transient aplastic crisis or erythema infectiosum, the secondary attack rate is about 50%.
• Exposure of nonimmune staff to infected children in a school setting carries a 20-50% risk of infection.
• The attack rate among exposed, nonimmune health workers is approximately 35%.
